What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a science that studies how the nervous system works and how it relates to the articular structures (bones, ligaments, muscles) in the body. Chiropractors have five years of education in chiropractic school, plus prerequisite courses in undergraduate school.

Is chiropractic just about back and neck pain?

No. Chiropractic is about much more. Pain is the last symptom to show up. Chiropractic deals with the nervous system. The nervous system is the first system in the body that is formed in the embryo. The nervous system includes the brain, and all the nerves in the body. The nerves go from the brain to every cell in the body. A person's face would still be recognizable even if all the bones, muscles, and ligaments were taken away and all that was left were the nerves. Information transmission from the brain to the body (efferent transmission), and the body back to the brain (afferent transmission), is essential in full body functioning. The brain, via the nerves, control all the major organ systems in the body (eyes, ears, nose, throat, thyroid gland, salivary glands, pituitary gland, gall bladder, liver, stomach, spleen, adrenals, pancreas, small and large intestines, bladder, etc.). Nerves also control all of the contraction of blood vessels and muscles in the body. If the nervous system is interfered with (chiropractic calls this subluxation) then the body does not function as it should.

How is the nervous system interfered with?

Bony articulations, usually the vertebrae in the spine, misalign; causing resulting inflammatory processes that put pressure on a nerve. This nerve pressure decreases the nerves' function: and the brain and body do not communicate as they should. Chiropractors call this subluxation.

What does misalignment do?

Misalignment not only causes pressure on nerves: but posture, muscle tone, weight bearing and balance also are affected. The change in weight bearing can lead to arthritis if left uncorrected. Scar tissue forms and leads to muscular imbalances. All the organs may be affected, including mental clarity.

How do chiropractors correct the misalignment or subluxation?

Chiropractors "adjust" the spine. They use a light quick thrust to restore millimeters of motion back into the spine to correct the misalignment. Chiropractors study the bones and how the spine moves to perform the adjustment with precision and accuracy.

Does an adjustment hurt? What will I experience?

After an adjustment, you will experience one of the following scenarios:

  1. No change at all.
  2. Immediate feeling of relief and relaxation.
  3. Increase in symptoms/discomfort or a change in the way you were feeling prior to the adjustment.

What you are feeling is much the same as the muscle soreness you experience after exercising. This is NOT a reason for concern. It is merely the result of your spine moving and becoming correctly aligned. With time and each subsequent adjustment, your body will become accustomed to the new changes.

You may also notice symptoms in other areas of your spine, especially if you have had these subluxations for an extended period of time. Your body has attempted to compensate for these misalignments, so by restoring the normal structural alignments, the areas above or below may shift. This compensation will also involve the supporting soft tissues (ligaments and tendons) and explains why it takes more than just one adjustment to make lasting spinal corrections.

What is family chiropractic care all about?

Promoting the integrity of the nervous system, no matter the age of the patient, by checking for subluxations, correcting them and eliminating the three causes of stress to the body - chemical stressors, physical stressors and emotional stressors.

What causes subluxation/ misalignments?

The 3 causes of stress are:

  1. Physical stressors: trauma, repetitive use, learning to walk, sports injuries, etc.
  2. Chemical stressors: nutrition (or lack thereof), medications, drugs, alcohol, or smoking
  3. Emotional stressors: money, job, busy life, family illness/ death, or even divorce
